Survey Analysis

In todays Media lesson I evaluated my results on survey monkey and these results from the questions people answered enable me to make improvements to my movie opening and know what is needed to be done to make my movie opening stand out. Each of the question results have been analysed deeply and this will enable me to know exactly what kind of audience I am targeting, what they want to see, and what I need to do in order to keep them happy.

Movie title analysis

In todays AS media lesson, I chose 3 movie titles and analysed them, e.g. what effect do they create, what is the purpose of the title. Here are screenshots of my Analysis of the three titles and in this I talk about the layout, effect and how they influence the audience

Movie opening analysis’

Here are the 3 Movie openings I analysed, including: Man of Steel, 22 Jump Street and Skyfall.

Skyfall Opening:

This film was produced by Eon Productions and is the 23rd James Bond film made in history. As we are introduced to the movie, we see a low angle shot of the James Bond falling (looks as though he’s unconscious) in the water. This creates an effect instantly as the audience wonder whether he’s alive or not. As James Bond loses control of his body in the water, the camera pans to a high angle shot to make him look vulnerable and then it dissolves to a black screen. This then draws the audience in towards the trailer (also makes you want to watch the movie itself) as they don’t know what has happened, or is about to happen. All of a sudden we see a woman’s hand grab him from his arm, trying to drag him deeper into the water, which tells the audience that she is trying to kill him or wants to drown him. The hand that is dragging down James Bond cuts to an extreme long shot where the hands are made to look twice the size of Bond’s height. This shot makes the hand look very controlling and dominant. An effortless pinch and pull down is enough to kill him. The shot then changes to a high angle shot to show Bond drowning further and sinking down a plughole which is created at the base of the sea. The scene then cuts to a mid-angle shot of him falling into the plug alongside all the sand around him. The camera shot then fades to a low angle shot of the sand moving in the water which dissolves to a black screen. This is another one of the many effective blackouts within this movie. This makes the audience wonder as to why he has been pulled down and where is he going as the audience still have no clue as to what’s happening. In the next sequence, James Bond’s journey into the waters continues, as he is still lifelessly falling deeper and deeper into the waters and moving further away from the camera, the shot is establishing to make him look like he’s in danger. This is shown to the audience as a high angle shot to make him look vulnerable and in danger. The shot then fades to him falling further away from the camera, up until the point where his body is no longer visible. Mise en Scene is also used within the opening. The mise en scene of the Skyfall opening is underwater, close to the seabed. Graphic matches have made the different places in the seabed seem to be like a plug hole, graveyard, forest, country side, kidnap room, deserts and storage houses although it is just a seabed. This tells the audience what type of places the movie itself is based around. The mise en scene also connotes to the audience the type of action that will take place in the movie, such as shoot outs kidnappings, visiting graveyards and many more. This creates an effect which makes the film seem very exciting and action packed.

Man of steel:

The trailer begins with opening credits to the companies that help create the film, which is used to advertise the companies that helped and can help sell future films and be beneficial for film companies in the long run.

The first shot we see is of Clarke, floating in water. It shows him floating along with many debris which suggests that an accident could have just happened. The clothing he is wearing is very minimal as he is only wearing a pair of torn up shorts. The shot used is a mid-close which enables us to see the background around him and get an image about what’s happening. The trailer then begins to play a dramatic song which consists of a woman’s voice which is really high pitched.

The next shot shows Clarke, floating even deeper than he was in the last shot as the sun is not shining onto him now. This could suggest that he may not need oxygen in order to breathe as he looks to be very deep now. His arms are badly scraped and sore red which backs up that he has been in an accident or something tragic has taken place. His eyes are closed which shows he is unconscious. This next shot is of Clarke in his younger years, hiding away as he realises he may not be from this world due to his ability of hearing peoples thoughts, supernatural. However the way he is positioned shows that even though he isn’t a human being, he has been brought up like a human in the way that he is emotional and behaves like a child. He is hiding in what looks like a store cupboard. The shot is also a mid-shot which enables us to see Clarke and his surroundings. The audio of this shot is still the high pitched woman but also with Young Clarke being comforted by his mother, who is a human whereas he isn’t. Mise en scene is used in the trailer, it’s used when Clarke is laying in the water with the debris around him, the audience can see all the surroundings which are included within the scene. It is also used when Clarke is in the cupboard to include the surroundings.

22 Jump Street:

22 Jump Street was released on June 4th 2014. The Mise-En-Scene is, the lighting. The lighting in the trailer is very bright and most of the scenes are shot in the sun or in a room with bright lighting. The bright lightning suggests that it is a happy film and the film shows off how there is a lot of fun involved. The use of alcohol and drugs within the movie link to the audience as the film is aimed at teenagers and above due to the trouble teenagers cause at times. Also, in society, teenagers are stereotyped as the type people who apparently take drugs at that age. The use of the sunglasses relate to the bright lighting and atmosphere showing that its very positive. The beach party clip also links to the audience. There are also guns which are used (Used as props). The guns show the audience what the characters jobs are and what their mission is. Although guns are seen as dangerous weapons, in the trailer they are shown to be cool and they are not shown as a threat. The use of the gun is very laid back, seeing as the two characters are meant to be cops and the movie itself is a comedy. Also, the actors used in the film are very young and this relates and reminds the audience as to whom the film is aimed at. The costumes that the people are wearing in the movie trailer are all brightly coloured which sets a high tone towards the happiness and good atmosphere. The brightly coloured clothing relates to the atmosphere of the film but also links to the age of the characters in the film as young people often wear bright clothes. Also, the women who are in the film are wearing very little clothing on them which links to the audience, attracting the male population and engaging them to watch the film.

The editing used in this trailer at the beginning is a few clips that quickly jump to each other as they are filmed within the same room and for the same scene just from different angles to create different effects. These quick jumps from each angle helps with the flow of this section of the trailer and it helps to introduce the story line and the genre of the film. It also goes along with the pace of the music at the beginning as well as the music played is very slow and the clip follows through playing slowly. The music then suddenly changes to a more upbeat song and a song which links to the audience (Young teenagers). The jumps from clip to clip get faster at this point and link to the song. (Turn down for what) There are also slides which appear along the screen enabling the text to appear on the screen in style. The first set of text which makes an appearance on the screen is a closing curtain transition, with the left of the screen coming towards the middle and the right of the screen doing the same in order for them both to both meet in the middle. This helps the text to flow and link with the rest of the trailer. The camera shots include long shots, close ups and also a hand held camera at points depending on the scene and what it’s about. The long shots from the camera help to show the scenery and also the settings in which the characters are in. This helps to set the scene for the audience and get an idea as to what the film is going to be about. The close ups are mainly of conversations of two people and this helps us focusing on what the characters are talking about and what their facial expression is like. The hand held camera in the trailer is used to overview events in the trailer. This shows to the audience that there is a lot going on and it is quite chaotic, just like the life of a typical teenager!
